Sairam,

In a satsang held in the divine presence in Singapore, on 8 August 2017; when asked how to turn the mind inwards here is what Swami said:

Question: How can I turn the mind inward?

Swami: How do you turn your car right or left? That is how you must turn your mind daily. You know which way you must go to reach a certain place, which will happen only if you turn the car right, because the direction is towards the right, which is the correct place. If you know that the place that you want to reach is on the right side, then why would you turn the car toward the left? When you know that your purpose and destination is to reach God, why would you turn the mind outward? That is not where you are going to find the truth. You must turn the mind inward, as that is where you will find the truth.

The two basics of turning the mind inward are viveka (discrimination) and vairagya (detachment). Discriminate each time, asking yourself, 'Will this take me toward God or away from God? If it is taking me away from God, why should I turn that way? I must turn the other way.' Then there is vairagya or detachment. Detaching yourself from that which takes you away from God and attaching your mind to things that will take you closer to God, is its very purpose.

If you are clear about where you want to reach, you will know where to turn the mind. You must do this by yourself – by your own self-effort.
